Renew us and Save us, O’Lord - Second Sunday of Lent

02-25-2024Weekly ReflectionFr. Fred Adamson

Dear Parishioners,

We continue our journey in Lent with the call to Renew us and Save us, O’Lord. The Second Sunday of Lent is the Gospel story of the Transfiguration. Jesus takes Peter, James and John up Mount Tabor where He gives them the great gift of seeing Him glorified with the great prophets Elijah and Moses, who represents the law. This encounter was one that they would never forget and recalled later when they faced challenges and difficulties. They were given the opportunity to see beyond the visible to strengthen their faith.

Last year I had the opportunity, during my time in Israel, to go to Mount Tabor. I had been there several times on other trips and it is a beautiful place. This particular day it was rainy and cloudy and as we approached the mountain top it was completely enveloped in the cloud and misty rain. We journeyed into the Church with plans to celebrate Mass in one of the side altars dedicated to Moses. Upon arrival, because of the rain and cloud cover, we were the only pilgrims on the mountain top. The priest caretaker asked me if I would prefer to celebrate at the main altar, which I and my brother priests immediately responded– yes!

I had been picked to be the main celebrant that day. As we began Mass a violent thunderstorm arose that shook the stone building with loud thunder and torrential rains. At one point a cat in the Church jumped into the arms of the fellow pilgrim for protection. When we walked out after Mass– the sky was clear and because of the rain, the clarity of the view was amazing. It was a day none of us will ever forget. I think each of us felt touched by God in our own way. Here is part of my reflection from that day:

The ascent up the mountain that was intentional and difficult for the disciples, the encounter with the transfigured Lord, the taste of Him glorified- “the glory moment” was a gift. The descend from the mountain holding that special encounter forever in the recesses of their heart that gives strength. We experienced a beautiful moment during Mass when a massive thunderstorm blew over the mountain—clapping thunder, lightning and pouring rain with just our group in the Church offering prayers and praise to God. It was good to be here. We encountered the Lord in Word, Sacrament and one another; but were called then to descend the mountain to continue the journey. Thank you God! Help us to listen to Your beloved Son.

I pray this Lent that you are alert to God’s presence and He provides a “glory moment” or encounter that brings you strength in your faith. Matthew Kelly pointed out this past week on Day 6 of the “33 Days to Eucharistic Glory” that, “prayer awakens our spiritual senses and we become aware of God at our side throughout the day. Not that He is in our presence, but that we are continually in His presence.” (p.59)

Be sure to take time to be with the Lord both individually, with your family and community. Trust that time to Him, that He will awaken His voice in your lives. Please check out opportunities in our bulletin, webpage and Facebook page to be in His presence. If you don’t receive our mid-week check in-sign up for Flocknotes.

Peace and joy in your Lenten journey,

Fr. Fred
