Your Presence...

10-08-2023Weekly ReflectionFr. Fred Adamson

Dear Parishioners,

I was filled with joy this past weekend with the presence of so many people participating in the various gatherings here at Saint Bernard. I gave thanks to God over and over for your loving witness as a community.

Presence—physical presence is an important part of the Christian journey. A fundamental teaching of our Church is the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and the deep love of God who desires to be physically present with us in our Sunday gatherings at Mass. Our Sunday obligation or rather “opportunity” is a reminder of His Real Presence and our call to be present to Him and one another.

The Church also helps to understand that there is a presence of Jesus in other ways as well. In the people gathered, which is the Mystical Body of Christ– the Church. I think that is why there is so much joy when we gather together in faith and how we encourage one another on the journey.

Another way Christ is present is in His Word—the Holy Scriptures help us to better understand the way God reveals his saving love for every generation. The Bible is meant to be read, prayed with and studied. Asking the question, how does God’s word speak to me today in my life situation, is a great way to grow in our relationship with God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The final way the Church teaches that Jesus is present is in the priest in our Sacrament role. I know I have found that being present to individuals and groups, as well as being on campus when they meet, makes me feel closer to all of you. I often liken it to a family—when everyone is “home” and present to one another it just seems right and good. As priests, our presence is unique; our vocation to serve, teach and guide the community.

Many blessings come when we learn to truly be present to one another. It is true in marriages, families, friendships and in Church communities. Every Sunday we come to give God time—in prayer and thanksgiving and to receive his Real Presence. We also give one another time, our fellow neighbor in the pew, the people we meet and greet on the way in and out of Church.

Let’s focus on being present to one another—recognizing God’s gift of His presence in His Word, Sacrament, People and Priest. Let us practice a conscious ministry of presence here in our parish but also in our homes and in the world.

Peace and Light in Christ,

Fr. Fred
