Ash Wednesday

02-27-2022Weekly ReflectionFr. Michael Straley

This Wednesday, March 2nd, is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the season of Lent. This is a special time in our Church, especially in these difficult days. It is a time for profound repentance and a turning back to God, for ourselves and for our Church. We as individuals and as a Church must repent and turn more wholeheartedly to God as we prepare for Easter and for eventual eternal life with God.

Contrary to what many believe in our world, forgiveness from sin must be specifically sought, not simply presumed. It includes being sorry for our sins and “firm purpose of amendment” in the future. I say this not to make you feel guilt but to remind you (and me) that this is what it means to truly love God...or anyone else.

Most parents expect their children to confess their wrongs, especially when they are confronted, when the sin is known by their parents. God expects no less of us as His children, and God knows all of our sins.

Confession is sometimes embarrassing, but it is a celebration, a freeing for a better life. Let us make this year a truly holy year as we prepare ourselves to make the love and joy of Christ present in our world.
