Jesus Teaches

07-07-2024Weekly ReflectionFr. Fred Adamson

Dear fellow disciples,

This weekend, Jesus teaches in the synagogue and all are astounded by His wisdom and mighty deeds. Teaching is a key role that Jesus had in sharing the Father’s plan of saving love. When we are taught, it can increase understanding, leading to deeper compassion, patience and conviction.

Last year while I was sitting in a classroom in Jerusalem soaking up history, tradition and culture, I was grateful to God that he placed in me a desire to be a life-long learner. I find that in any book, lecture, documentary or experience, I can learn and take something away. I think this is the true role of a disciple – one who has a deep desire to sit at the foot of Jesus and learn; to soak in wisdom and truth in the context of history and culture – real life.

As disciples, let’s commit to being lifelong learners about our faith- find a book, listen to a podcast, take an on-line course, study scripture. I propose we read a book together over the summer – I am going to read, Salvation – What Every Catholic Should Know by Michael Patrick Barber. It is available in paperback and on Kindle. May it help us grow in our wisdom and faith in the Lord and His Church.

In August or September, we might get together to share what we learned and what helped us on our faith journey. My dad would often comment when I sat around reading a book, “readers are leaders.”

As you read this reflection I will be back in Michigan visiting family for three weeks. I plan on staying in touch through the weekly reflections and mid-week check-ins. The time away with family is good. I enjoy reading, boating, gardening, walking, kayaking and cooking. There is a lot to do in Michigan but just sitting at the lake pondering life is most relaxing.

Be assured of my prayers.

Peace in Him,

Fr. Fred
