Ascension of Jesus

05-12-2024Weekly ReflectionFr. Fred Adamson

Dear Parishioners,

This week we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus – the prayer of Mass reminds us, “He ascended, not to distance Himself from our lowly state but that we, His members, might be confident of following where He, our Head and Founder, has gone before.” It is an invitation to a deeper understanding that we are living in a different state of being with Christ as our head, not separated but living as people on a journey focused on living His truth and love in our lives each day. Of course, it is through the gift of the Holy Spirit, which we celebrate next week on the Feast of Pentecost, that we find power and grace to love like Jesus.

Easter, Ascension and Pentecost remind me that as Christians we live different in the world. Any of us can look around and see the imperfections of the world and our individual lives. Jesus told us, “I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” It is the great challenge of the Christian to live in the world but not of the world. It is hard to see conflict, division, hatred and evil that exist but we realize that we are not of this world and it will never be perfect. People have attempted for all of history to create perfect communities, societies, government systems, utopia’s but there is only one who creates true perfection and that is the One who Ascends into the heavens and sends the gift of the Holy Spirit to empower us as Christians.

We then must stand united with Him, both feet firmly planted on the earthly path to heaven. All too often we get caught with one foot in the grave and one on the path to heaven. We feel worried, anxious and afraid rather than confident in His love, His plan and the reality of His care. Do not let worldly ways rob you of peace in Him.

Remember, “He ascended, not to distance Himself from our lowly state but that we, His members, might be confident of following where He, our Head and Founder, has gone before.” We rejoice that He has risen and ascended! Alleluia.

Happy Mother’s Day to the women of our parish who have given life to their families and this community. The gift of a mother’s care is an unparalleled love that each human heart needs. The feminine genius is one that nurtures receptivity to God’s will, provides a sensitivity and wisdom to the human person, is generous in love, kindness and hospitality, and enters into the mystery of motherhood, sharing joy in fostering the growth of holiness in the people around her.

I am grateful for the gift of my own mother, for her example, of my sister and sister-in-law and the many women who I have been privileged to encounter who truly embrace the spirit of our Blessed Mother and her practical wisdom and deep love for God. Today, on Mother’s Day, we give thanks to these women and ask God to continue to bless and strengthen them.

As we await the Feast of Pentecost next week, let us pray for a deep renewal and powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit here in our parish and Diocese of Phoenix.

Easter peace and joy in the Risen Lord.

Blessings,

Fr. Fred
