Take Courage!

Dear Parishioners,

Today's readings invite us to place our trust in God, who remains present even in the storms of life. Anxiety, fear and doubt are experiences we all know. At one time or another, each of us has faced moments when the waves seemed too high, the wind too strong and the future uncertain. Yet it is often in those very moments that the Lord comes closest to us.

In today's Gospel, the disciples are struggling against the wind and waves when they see Jesus walking toward them across the water. Their first reaction is fear. Who would not be frightened by such a sight? But Jesus immediately speaks words that continue to echo through every age: "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."

Peter, with his characteristic boldness, responds, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." Jesus simply replies, "Come." Peter steps out of the boat and begins walking toward the Lord. But as he notices the strength of the wind, fear overtakes him and he begins to sink. His desperate cry, "Lord, save me!" is met immediately by the outstretched hand of Jesus, who lifts him up and leads him safely back into the boat. Once Jesus is with them, the wind dies down.

What a beautiful lesson in faith. We often begin with great confidence, trusting that the Lord is leading us. Then life's challenges, disappointments and uncertainties distract us from Christ. We begin to focus more on the storm than on the Savior. Yet today's Gospel reminds us that Jesus never abandons us. Even when our faith falters, his hand is always extended toward us. Our task is not to have perfect faith but to keep turning back to him with trust.

That trust is strengthened through a faithful and consistent relationship with the Lord. Faith does not simply happen; it grows through prayer, worship, learning and life within the community of the Church. As a parish family, we are committed to helping one another deepen that relationship with Christ.

This week, we invite families to register their children for faith formation, sacramental preparation and our youth choir programs. These are much more than activities on a calendar. They are opportunities for young people and their families to encounter Jesus, build lasting friendships in faith and establish habits that will sustain them throughout life. When faith becomes part of the rhythm of family life, hearts are better prepared to weather life's inevitable storms.

I also encourage you to think of someone you know, a neighbor, friend or family member, who may be searching for a place to belong. A simple invitation can become the beginning of a life-changing encounter with Christ. Our parish continues to grow because parishioners generously invite others to experience the love of God and the joy of belonging to our community. We are truly stronger when we walk this journey of faith together.

May we always keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Whatever storms we face, he continues to say to each of us, "Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid." With Christ at the helm, our parish family can move forward with confidence, trusting that he will always lead us safely to the shore.
