Independence Day

07-03-2022Weekly ReflectionFr. Michael Straley

I don’t need to remind you that Monday is the Fourth of July, our Independence Day. Yes, it is a day to celebrate and be joyful. It is also a day to be very thankful for what we have received from our ancestors and from our God. It is definitely not a time to take our life for granted.

Like many of our ancestors, we are in a difficult time, and it is a time to focus on what is important. It is not a time to give up hope. Our country has been through worse times than these. It was the people of those times who brought us through them. Now it is our turn.

I am not talking politically, although politics are involved. Much more important is our unity, our believing that we can be and are one. This is our Catholic faith as well. When we gather to worship we are one, not a bunch of individuals, one family in God. And as our national pledge says, we are also one nation under God.

Please think about coming tomorrow morning to give thanks for all we have received from so many before us.

Have a Blessed and safe 4th.
