Mercy: God’s Invitation to Love Boldly

Dear Parishioners,

This week, we hear the memorable story of The Good Samaritan. It is one that sticks in our mind as Christians because it reminds us that treating others with mercy is the best way to show our love for God and faith in Him. To love our neighbor as ourselves is a key statement because we must first remember that God’s love for us is what makes us confident to truly show His love and mercy to others. When we know God’s love, we no longer compete and compare, we avoid seeing others as outsiders or enemies, but rather as our neighbors.

In a world of division and separation, doing good for someone we do not know - a stranger can be a true exercise of love. It has an impact deep in our soul - because it is God’s love shining through us.

Sometimes, even in the Church, there can be such divisions. Who is more holy, who is doing things the right way, etc. This Gospel should remind us that mercy is key in all actions.

I continue my time back in Michigan and have enjoyed a few days sleeping in, or rather enjoying a leisurely morning with a cup of java, prayer, and then a good book. Leisure is an important concept in the Christian way of life. It is not simply a time of doing nothing but rather a time to slow down and focus on God’s goodness. We do that with family and friends enjoying time together. We do that with activities like reading, playing games, enjoying nature and God’s creation.

Be aware this week of the opportunities God provides for you to be a good Samaritan. Perhaps in some unexpected way, we will be given the chance to show God’s mercy and love. Remember also, that sometimes we must allow Jesus, the Good Samaritan, to care for us. Let Him provide grace and healing, a place of shelter in His abiding love.

May the Gospel this week inspire and motivate us to the unique love God calls us to model in our lives.
